A riotous video for the 2023 version of the song created for The Weather at World’s End, filmed by Mark Case and Jude Smyth at the premises of Scott’s Jazz Club in East Belfast. Ali Mackenzie plays bass on the recording, but he’d double booked a rehearsal with someone else on the evening of the shoot. Dave McLarnon (on BVs on the recording) gamely stood in on bass for the film. Janet Henry (vocals), Colin Harper (guitar), Norman Boyd (lead guitar), Louise Potter (drums). After writing ‘Better Weather’, Colin wanted to write something happy but had nothing in that tank so he drew from old song titles – delta blues and 60s rock mostly.
A fabulous video created by Marry Waterson, with generous assistance from Arts Council NI, for the 2023 Weather at World’s End version of this song. Henry Parker filmed some phone footage of Katie Spencer on the Yorkshire moors and Marry worked her magic. Something to do with the end of the world. Katie Spencer (vocal), Colin Harper (guitars), Scott Flanigan (piano), Ali Mackenzie (bass), Louise Potter (drums).
Another low budget yet high concept (so he says) film by Mark Case, this one shot at Brian Houston’s Stoney Road Studio (where we recorded the song in between lockdowns in 2020) and locations in Belfast’s Titantic Quarter. Credited to Bourgeois Fury, the non-party-political political wing of the Legends (Colin suggests, in short, that none of them are any good). Dave McLarnon (vocals), Colin Harper (guitar), Lonesome Chris Todd (guitar), Norman Boyd (lead guitar), Anna Grindle and Adele Ingram (backing vocals), Petesy Burns (drums, backing vocals).
The first Bourgeois Fury single (and video) – really, activism via comedy/rage against 90 NI Assembly members sulking at home on full pay from the public purse. Their hubris, mediocrity, incompetence and entitlement is breathtaking and the stench of corruption is never far away. Filmed and edited by Mark Case and fronted by punk legend Petesy Burns (co-vocal, guitar) with Bruce McClements (co-vocal). Colin mimes to Bruce’s voice in the video, but Bruce is also seen at the mic in the studio – Bruce’s vocal quality providing Colin with an audio platform to make a video point! Also features Colin Harper (guitar), Ali Mackenzie (bass), Flatts Conigan (organ) and Donal McCann (drums).
A montage video for the 2019 EP track, including some snaps from the session. Featuring Mickey Rafferty (vocals), Ellen Weir and Rowena Cairns (backing vocals), Colin Harper (acoustic guitar), Chris Probst (lead guitar), Ali Mackenzie (bass), Petesy Burns (drums).
Legends ringmaster Colin Harper rarely sings anything he writes but he was inspired to write and front this homage to Bert Jansch when asked to appear at a Bert Jansch tribute concert at the Black Box, Belfast, organised by Steve McCann in early 2019 within the Bert Jansch Foundation’s ‘Around the World in 80 Plays’ project – send four Yamaha guitars around the world for artists to play them and film tributes to Bert before sending them on. This clip was filmed by Mark Case at the fabulous Lamppost Café a couple of days after Steve’s event.
Legends ringmaster Colin Harper rarely plays on stages – a position that falls wildly off a cliff in November and December 2023 when the first Legends of Tomorrow concerts are staged, in Portrush and Belfast. Nevertheless, he has done the odd turn at some open mics and charity events in recent years. Here he is at a fundraiser he helped organize for the charitable trust-owned County Tyrone mansion Lissan House. Several other Legends alumni were also on the bill that night. Phone clip courtesy of Mid Ulster gig-going icon Pauline Bonner.
In 2023, after the release of The Weather at Worlds End: 1997–2023, Colin Harper was approached by Barry Devlin with a mad plan to film a documentary on the Legends, which meant concerts needed to happen – scheduled for December. Being an essentially non-performing writer/musician, Colin had never needed to learn his repertoire. This is the first of a dozen or so clips of Colin (re)learning and talking about his repertoire ahead of those concerts.
